Maximising bearing life in construction vehicles
New equipment and in-cab features are evolving to fit consumer preferences. The bearings used for these applications must also follow suit with higher performance capabilities and enhanced reliability. And, most equipment manufacturers want to find ways to increase power while maintaining the same component envelope dimensions. When developing a new vehicle or making improvements to an existing design, one has to consult with a bearing expert during the design stage. Doing so can result in alternative bearing solutions that extend the service life, optimise costs, or a blend of both.

A bearing consultation will also cover proper lubrication and sealing. If a lack of on-site maintenance is an issue, the bearing expert can also offer maintenance-free options.

Bearings employed in harsh environments demand manufacturing excellence through robust processes ensuring high quality and consistency. Some of the areas to pay attention when selecting a bearing manufacturer are as follows:

High-quality steel: Steel with a fine grain and low non-metal inclusion should be used. Partner with a manufacturer that is ISO9001 or TS16949, like CCTY Bearing. These manufacturers inspect all incoming steel to ensure that it meets the standards.

Traceability: Bearing manufacturers should be able to trace the final product back to the steel lot. This provides evidence as to the extent of control over production and quality.

Process control: In order to verify that every product meets established standards, strict controls, electronic tracking and inspections must be in place. Advanced product quality plan (APQP) procedures, ISO/TS 16949 certification, high level of automation and in-house test rigs ensure stable production processes.

Sealing properties: Construction machinery requires seals to protect the bearing against contamination like dirt and liquids, while retaining lubrication. Depending on the application, the seal may be on both sides of the bearing or just on one side. The type of bearing, seal friction, shaft surface speed and finish and the space envelope factor into available sealing options.

When choosing a bearing company, look for one that has a robust research and development team. Their expertise with new materials, cross-over designs and lubrication selection, naturally lead to extended life solutions.

"When choosing a bearing company, look for one that has a robust research and development team."

- Mitul Dave, Managing Director, CCTY Bearing India
